Woah. When I picked up this book with its unassuming cover from the young adult cart, I was not expecting such a heavy story, nor one with so much depth. There's just so much that happens
in this story, it almost seems like several different novellas put together to form the narrative of this particular summer. I was kept interested by the plight of the children, their perseverance, the adults and situations they encounter along the way, and their ultimate fight for their true homecoming. Definitely one that deserves a reread every once in awhile. Ever so slightly dated, I can certainly see this being updated and becoming a movie. There is no way to walk away from this book unattached to Dicey, James, Maybeth and of course Sammy, world's most adorable six-year-old.
