This was all right, but I’m starting to think I picked Vowell’s best book to start with (Assassination Vacation
), because nothing else has quite measured up to that one. I couldn’t get through Wordy Shipmates
, and this one left me cold. The essays felt disjointed when put together, though taken individually each was well-written. Sometimes I think Vowell thinks too highly of herself, and her “self-deprecation” is all simply a façade to seem likeable and down to earth. Sometimes I feel more charitable. I think I’ll give one more book of hers a try, only because it came up on hold for me (Partly Cloudy Patriot
). We’ll see.
